BOXING THE ROOTS

How do you feel when you’re up against a challenging street tree project? You know the type – where other council departments are involved and the public aren’t happy about change or about losing parking. This is a pretty fair description of what two divisions at Dubbo City Council were facing – the engineers and the horticulturalists. Ian McAlister, manager of Horticultural Services describes their combined solution. It’s not only interesting, but also satisfying in a new-tech kinda way…

Let’s set the scene. This trial project is based on a two block length of one of Dubbo’s CBD streets, 30m wide and home to the Courthouse and the Police Station. Before works began in 2010, Brisbane Street sported the remnants of a line of 78 year-old white cedars which Ian described as stunted, failing and out of scale with the existing buildings.
